Company Background and Founding.
About Company.
Beewise is an Israeli agri-tech startup focused
on developing robotic beehives to protect and manage honeybee colonies. The
company’s flagship product is the “BeeHome”, a solar-powered, AI-driven
beehive system that allows for 24/7 remote beekeeping with minimal human
intervention.
Beewise was founded in 2018 with a mission to “save the bees”
and secure the global food supply by reversing the trend of colony collapse. Its
business model is tightly coupled to this mission – the team often measures
success in terms of bee lives saved rather than just revenue
(reportedly dozens of bees saved per dollar of revenue).
In fact, Beewise claims
that “for every dollar we make, we save at least two bees”, illustrating how its
profit motives align with environmental impact.
Beewise’s founding team brings together diverse expertise in software,
engineering, and beekeeping. The startup was co-founded by Saar Safra, an
Israeli serial tech entrepreneur with a background in software (and multiple
prior startups in the U.S.), alongside Eliyah Radzyner, a commercial beekeeper
who had firsthand insight into the challenges of modern apiculture.
They were
joined by Hillel (Hallel) Schreier, Boaz Petersil, and Yossi Sorin – all part of
the founding team (pictured below) – who contributed skills in robotics and
engineering to reinvent the beehive. Radzyner experienced a “eureka moment”
in the field around 2017 when he realized that a computer might manage hives
better than a person, which spurred him to approach Safra with the idea. Safra,
returning to Israel after years in Seattle, knew nothing about bees at first, but
was struck by the fact that the conventional wooden-box hive design hadn’t
changed in ~150 years (since Langstroth’s 1850s invention). Motivated by the bee
crisis and this gap in innovation, the team formed Beewise to apply 21st-century
