SPECIAL ISRAELVALLEY. Zohran Mamdan, le prochain maire de New York (il démarre son mandat en janvier 2026), avait suscité une polémique avec une série de déclarations dans lesquelles il remettait ouvertement en question la nature de l’État d’Israël.
Lors d’un débat, Mamdani avait déclaré que « Je reconnaîtrais Israël mais pas comme un État juif ». Cette déclaration avait suscité une vague de critiques de la part des dirigeants communautaires et des secteurs modérés au sein même du Parti démocrate.
L’homme politique, d’origine ougandaise et d’origine indienne, connu pour ses positions progressistes, avait également affirmé que « les actions d’Israël à Gaza constituent un génocide ».
Ses propos avaient été qualifiés de « sources de division et de dangereuses » par les Ligue catholique et d’un « cadeau politique à Donald Trump » de la part de l’ancien gouverneur Andrew Cuomo qui avait accusé Mamdani de « légitimer un discours qui érode la coexistence à New York ».
La controverse s’était amplifiée lorsque Mamdani avait mis en lumière la collaboration entre Cornell Tech et le Technion qu’il voulait arrêter. Un porte-parole de Cornell Tech avait réaffirmé que « l’alliance Cornell-Technion est une initiative éducative et technologique, et non un accord militaire ou de défense ».
Après la publication des résultats de l’élection municipale de New York, le Technion a publié une déclaration faisant référence à un « partenariat solide » et ajoutant : « Au Technion, nous comptons poursuivre notre collaboration fructueuse avec nos collègues de l’Université Cornell et du campus Cornell Tech, ainsi qu’avec les institutions du gouvernement de la ville de New York, comme nous l’avons fait jusqu’à présent. »
Un chiffre important: plus de 12 milliards de dollars par an dans l’économie new-yorkaise sont investis par des israéliens. Plusieurs analystes ont averti que « rompre ces liens aurait des conséquences immédiates sur l’innovation et l’emploi dans la ville ».

The campus was inaugurated in 2017, when the losing candidate in yesterday’s election Andrew Cuomo was governor of the State of New York and Bill de Blasio was mayor of New York City. The idea of setting up the joint campus was formed during Michael Bloomberg’s tenure as mayor. He invited the heads of universities from various countries to take part in a competition for setting up the campus, which was won by Cornell and the Technion.
The Technion’s statement goes on to say, « Since it was established in 2012, the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute has become a flourishing and successful institute that encourages global entrepreneurship and drives the development of the city’s economy and the technology sector that works in it. The entrepreneurship program in the institute, the Runway Postdoc Startup Program, has so far yielded some 130 knowledge-intensive startup companies the vast majority of which (84%) are based in New York, create jobs, and contribute to the city’s technology ecosystem.
« The partnership between the Technion and Cornell was born out of a vision of establishing an applied science and engineering research campus in the City of New York and creating a fruitful and powerful bridge between academia and industry. The partnership has contributed a great deal to the development of the city.
